PRESS RELEASE
SOUTHBOROUGH POLICE DEPARTMENT
FEBRUARY, 2009
REVERSE 9-1-1 ACTIVATED IN SOUTHBOROUGH
The Town of Southborough has recently entered into an agreement with the Worcester County Sheriff's Department that allows the Town to use the Reverse 9-1-1 telephone system for public safety reasons.
The R 911 system is owned and operated by the Worcester County Sheriff's Office and was made possible by a grant received from the national Homeland Security. This system is to be used for public safety incidents and situations such as a lost child, missing person, road closures, fire emergencies, to name a few.
This system is activated via a phone call originating from the Southborough Police department to the Sheriff's office. Then the message will be sent out to Southborough residents and businesses with the description of the emergency or situation and with any follow up instructions.
The North Worcester County used the system during the recent ice storm to notify residents of where the nearest shelters were located. The Town of Sutton used R 911 for a water pollution problem they experienced. Hopefully Southborough will not have to use it in the near future, or very often, but it should be a comfort to its residents that the Police, Fire and Town officials are continuing to reach out in a proactive manner to maintain the highest level of protection available for our community.
Please note that the Reverse 9-1-1 system can only contact hard- line telephone numbers only at this time. The system cannot contact cell phone numbers at this time.
Firefighter/EMT-P Ryan Cringan, and members of Group 4 (FF/EMT-P Chris Shanahan, FF/EMT-P David Wills, FF/EMT-I Neal Aspesi & FF/EMT-P Ryan Cringan) display their Red Shirts in support of our troops on Red Shirt Friday.
