Emergency Medical Services
Firefighter/Paramedic Kenneth Strong, EMS Director
The Southborough Fire Department started operating a Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance in 1971 under the direction of then Chief Edward F. Brock. The Town's first ambulance was built by 1971 Cadillac/Superior. In 1978, a second ambulance was added providing an ambulance for each of the two stations.
The service was upgraded to the Intermediate level in 1999 by Chief Peter Phaneuf and then EMS Director John L. Kendall.
A waiver to operate a Paramedic and a Basic EMT was granted by the Office of Emergency Medical Services in March 2002. This waiver basically allows the Emergency Room to be brought to the patient via the use of Paramedics. Dr. Taryn Kennedy, M.D., to which the citizens of Southborough owe a dept of gratitude, is the Department's Medical Control Physician. Special thanks to Lt. Victor Robidoux, the Department's EMS Committee (FF/EMT-Paramedics Francis Mahoney, Chris Dano, Mark Sadowski, Chris Shanahan and Ken Strong), and all of the members of the Southborough Fire/EMS Department for their hard work and dedication in making the goal of paramedic services to the residents of Southborough a reality.
