Thunderstorms cause flooding & lightning issues
July 7, 2009
A string of thunderstorms pounded Southborough Tuesday afternoon with intense cloud-to-ground lightning and heavy rains. The rain gauge at the DPW building measured 4.66 inches of rain, which fell in a few short hours.
The public safety complex was struck by lightning causing a temporary loss of some radio and telephone communications. One police officer who was in the police station garage received a shock during the strike. He was treated and released from a local hospital.
Rain water inundated the Public Library causing flooding in the Children's room. Quick work by the library staff saved hundreds of books from the affected water.
Streets, streams and yards which are normally ok in heavy rains suffered significant flooding. Many roads were closed or obstructed including, but not limited to: Boston Road, Main Street, Middle Road, Parkerville Road, Pine Hill Road.
