April 28, 2008

Firefighters were kept busy responding to burning complaints and unauthorized burning, one of which resulted in a brush fire.

At 2:50 PM, firefighters responded to a report of a brush fire in a back yard on Deerfoot Road. The fire was the result of an unauthorized burn. The fire, fanned by easterly winds was advancing towards the homes on Strawberry Hill Road. A box was struck recalling personnel. Brush 24 was positioned on Deerfoot Road, while Car 30 with the brush fire skid unit proceeded into a back yard on Strawberry Hill Road to cut off the fire spread. While this was occurring, a vehicle crash with injuries was reported at River St. (Rt. 85) and Southville Road. Engine 21, Ambulance 28 and a Hopkinton Ambulance responded. One person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Other burning-related incidents were reported at:

Brush 24 in the driveway of a home on Deerfoot Road supplying firefighters with water to extinguish the fire in the back which was advancing towards Strawberry Hill Road.

The fire, being pushed by the wind, advances up the hill towards Strawberry Hill Road.

Fire and EMS personnel from Southborough and Hopkinton tend to an injured driver in this crash at River Street and Southville Road. This crash occurred in the middle of the brush fire above. Hopkinton was called to assist as Southborough units were initially committed to the brush fire.
